What is the ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard

The ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard

ISO 9001 is an international Management System Standard for quality management. The ISO 9001 Standard is published by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization. Over a million organisations worldwide are certified to the ISO 9001 Standard, making it the most widely used management tool throughout the world.

ISO 9001 outlines a set of requirements for the management of organisations. Think of ISO 9001 as a best practice management formula. The requirements of the ISO 9001 Standard are generic and can be applied to any organisation, large or small, whatever its product or service, in any industry sector.

ISO 9001:2015 is the latest version of the ISO standard. The standard was first published in 1987. To address changing business needs and technological progress, the standard is reviewed and updated periodically. It was first updated in 1991, then in 2000, 2088 and 2015.

The ISO 9000 family of Standards

Many refer to the Standard as ISO 9000; however, this is the term used to describe a family of Quality Standards, with ISO 9001:2015 being the most widely recognised.

ISO 9001:2015 sets out the requirements of a Quality Management System. Other Standards in the overarching family include ISO 9000:2015, which covers the basic concepts and language; ISO 9004:2009, which focuses on how to make a Quality Management System more efficient and effective; and ISO 19011:2011, which provides guidance on internal and external audits of Quality Management Systems.

ISO 9001 in Australia

ISO 9001:2015 is widely used in Australia. Over 10,000 organisations of all sizes and sectors are certified to this Standard. More and more organisations are adopting ISO 9001:2015, and certification has become a regular requirement for Australian government tenders. Many of our clients say  that they are able to run their business more effectively, and that they have a distinct advantage over their uncertified competition and are more successful in winning new contracts.

How to apply for ISO 9001 certification

Before you apply for ISO 9001:2015 certification you need to develop a quality management system that has certain procedures and processes that meet the requirements of the standard. After the system has been implemented you will need to conduct an internal audit and a management meeting to review the performance of the system. Now you can apply for certification by contacting one of the Eighty-eight certification bodies operating in Australia.

ISO 9001 Certification

ISO 9001:2015 certification is issued by a certification body. The certification body will conduct an independent audit to assess whether your Quality Management System complies with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard, and whether your business is correctly implementing the System. Following the successful completion of your audit, the certification body will provide you with a certificate, which will verify that your business operations meet the requirements of the Standard. Our Clients & Feedbacks

  • “From their first response to our enquiry we knew ISO Global were the company to help us get our ISO 9001 system back on track. Their approach of creating a simple, easy to use and easy to implement system was exactly what we were looking for. We were excepting the process to demand a lot more of our time than it did, it was wonderful to find that they did exactly what they promised and created the system for us, allowing us to focus on running the business. We got exactly what we needed and wanted, a certified system which was easy to implement and easy to use. Our auditor was very complimentary about the system, never having audited on of ISO Global systems before. He described it as “simple, easy to understand and user friendly.”

    Faber Castell
  • “We found the process of gaining our ISO 9001 accreditation with ISO Global much easier and less stressful than we had imagined. From the initial meeting I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly their consultant understood our business and appreciated the needs we had as a business. Throughout the development of the quality system the communication was excellent, we were kept informed of progress and asked for input at all stages.

The end result, the quality management system, closely meets our business needs. An unforeseen additional benefit came from the team looking at the business with a different focus rather than being immersed in the business. This has created a different perspective which I am sure will continue to bring about positive change. Achieving the certification has brought very positive reactions from our customers.

I would certainly recommend ISO Global to any business colleagues looking to gain the ISO 9001 certification.”

    HPA
  • “We wanted our current system, which was hard to navigate and use, to be updated and revised so that it was simple to use and maintain and reflected the way the business operates.

Dennis was a great help, taking the time to speak to people involved in the process and amending the documentation we had.  He was also gave us great guidance regarding the level of maintenance required for the system and simpler ways of managing processes.

The system we have now is exactly what we needed, our BSI auditor was very happy with the documentation, structure and logic which Dennis had created for us. We successfully passed our recertification audit and are looking forward to ISO Global continuing to assist us with the maintenance of the system”

    Mayo Hardware
  • “There were lots of people out there telling us it would take a long time, be hard work and very difficult and that our plan to implement a triple Integrated System (Quality, Safety and Environment) within a six month period was ambitious.

We achieved our target and passed the certification audit the first time round.  ISO Global worked with us to ensure we met our target successfully.  They proved that the process doesn’t have to be difficult, lengthy or stressful”

    Town Living
  • “Thank you so much for preparing us so magnificently for the implementation of our Quality Management System. Your professionalism, understanding of the requirements and expert advice was very much appreciated. The ability of our Quality Management System to provide the framework and processes for the delivery of high level of emergency care to our patients has benefitted substantially from your input and expertise”.

    Chevra Hatzolah
  • “Ken listened to us and developed a management system that represented our business and objectives, made it simple to use and simple to implement without introducing procedures and forms that weren’t necessary or didn’t cover what we were already doing now. The guys have embraced the new management systems and are already showing signs of improvement in our work (environment and guys motivation to be apart of it).

Nothing was a problem for Ken and we fixed things as we went along so there wasn’t too much work that needed to be done following the internal audit. This has made an almost seamless move towards us attaining our certification for safety and environment. It has been rewarding for us to have Ken help us with our management systems”.

    WillPlay
  • St John

“St John Patient Transport selected ISO Global based on a recommendation from the St John CEO and the quality of their proposal which also represented value for money.

ISO Global quickly grasped the essence of our business and in addition to creating a Quality Management System which reflects our business needs; the consultants were able to provide guidance and direction in streamlining processes.

We were extremely happy with the end result, which our certification auditor described as “excellently done”

    St John Patient Transport
  • Atmeco

“Given the experience of developing our OHS system in-house I expected that the process would be onerous and would involve a significant amount of my time.  We were pleasantly surprised that this was not the case and that Ken provided us with the input and level of support we had been led to expect from ISO Global’s proposal.

We are very happy to have gained a triple certification, with ISO Global integrating our OHS system with their Quality and Environmental system simplifying the management and certification.  The system Ken created is a great reflection of the way we work, even the auditor commented on how good a fit the system is. Through the process of developing the system we have had to examine all aspects of the business which has highlighted areas where we can make improvements.”
